Our R&D team expands based on project needs, often requiring specialist design engineers for fixed-term contracts. By registering your interest, you’ll be first to know when opportunities arise that match your expertise.
What design engineering at Shadow Robot looks like:
Design, develop, and test complex electro-mechanical robotic systems
Conduct rapid development and testing on proof-of-concept and prototype assemblies
Contribute expertise to next-generation dexterous hand products
Work with high autonomy, collaborating directly with senior management
Troubleshoot engineering challenges throughout design, manufacturing, and testing phases
Participate in hardware integration and testing specification and execution
Core requirements:
Minimum 4 years of commercial experience in robotics or related fields
Strong background in both mechanical and electronic engineering
Proficiency in MCAD (preferably Solidworks or Onshape) and/or ECAD (preferably Altium)
Excellent C++ and Python skills, particularly in Linux environments
Experience with ROS (Robot Operating System)
Proven track record designing, specifying, and assembling complex electro-mechanical systems
Strong interest and experience in designing, building, and developing robots
Valued skills:
Excellent documentation capabilities
Knowledge of surface mount PCB assembly and rework
Experience with low-volume designs transitioning to higher-volume manufacturing
Fast CAD execution skills
Personal qualities:
Curiosity and enthusiasm for robotics and systems engineering
Team-oriented attitude with a closer-finisher mindset
Strong attention to detail and professional maturity
Gospel Oak, London – easily accessible and ideal if you’re London-based or can comfortably commute.
Future roles may be fixed-term contracts (typically 3-6 months) and are likely to be determined as inside IR35, with PAYE tax and National Insurance contributions deducted at source.
